Electrician SEO: Why “Near Me” Searches Are Won on Google Business Profile

Electrician SEO: Why “Near Me” Searches Are Won on Google Business Profile
Think about how someone finds an electrician. A power point stops working. Half the kitchen goes dark. They grab their phone and type “electrician near me”.
They are not reading blog posts. They are not comparing ten websites. They glance at the little map, look at who has the most reviews, and ring one of the top three. Job sorted.
Here is the thing most sparkies get wrong. They pour money into a flashy website, when the search is actually decided somewhere else entirely. On your Google listing.
Why the map beats the website
When someone searches for a local trade, Google leads with a map and a short list of businesses. That panel, with your hours, reviews, phone number and a “Directions” button, is your Google Business Profile. It is free, and for an electrician it does far more heavy lifting than your homepage ever will.
The numbers back this up. BrightLocal’s 2026 research found 84% of people searched for a local business online in the last three months, and 73% did it on their phone. Just over half started on Google. When your hands are covered and your lights are out, you are not opening a laptop. You are tapping the first solid option on your phone.
So if your listing is thin, wrong, or missing, you are invisible at the exact moment someone needs you. It does not matter how nice your website looks.
What decides who ranks in the map
Google is trying to answer one question when someone types “electrician near me”. Who is nearby, open, and clearly trusted? Three things drive that answer, and they are all in your control.
- Distance and accuracy. Google needs to know exactly where you are and where you work. A listing with the correct address, service areas and up-to-date hours gives it confidence to show you.
- Reviews. This is the big one. Reviews are one of the strongest things Google looks at for local results, and freshness counts, not just the star rating. A sparky with forty recent reviews will almost always beat one with six from three years ago.
- Completeness. The more complete your listing, correct category, services listed, real photos, the more Google trusts it and the more a customer picks you.
The review habit that changes everything
Most electricians do great work and never ask for a review. That is money left on the table.
BrightLocal found 96% of people are happy to leave a review for a business. They just never get asked. So ask. Finish a job in Penrith, hand the customer your phone or text them a direct link, and say “would you mind leaving a quick review, it really helps.” Two minutes of your day, and it compounds into the thing that wins you the next ten jobs.
Reply to them too. A short thank you on the good ones, and a calm, professional reply to the odd unhappy one. That reply often reassures the next reader more than the complaint worried them.
Get the basics right, in order
If you do nothing else, do these, roughly in this order.
- Claim and complete your listing. Correct name, phone, address, service areas and hours. Pick “Electrician” as your main category, not something vague.
- Add real photos. Your van, your team, a few tidy jobs. It tells people you are real and you take pride in the work.
- Build reviews steadily. A few a month beats a big burst then silence.
- List your services plainly. Switchboard upgrades, safety switches, emergency call-outs, whatever you do, in the words customers use.
- Keep it current. Update your hours for public holidays and answer the questions box yourself before a stranger does.
Do not ignore the AI angle
One more thing worth knowing. People are starting to ask AI tools for recommendations too. BrightLocal found 31% of people now use AI at least monthly to find a local business. And those AI tools pull from the same data, your Google listing and your reviews.
So a strong profile does double duty. It wins the map today, and it feeds the AI-Powered SEO game that is growing right behind it. You do not need two strategies. You need one solid, well-fed listing.
The mistake that quietly costs sparkies jobs
Here is one we see constantly. An electrician does brilliant work for fifteen years, has a great reputation by word of mouth, and assumes that reputation carries online. It does not, not automatically.
Google cannot see your reputation in the pub or on the street. It can only see the signals you feed it: your listing, your reviews, your website. So the sparky who is genuinely the best in the area can sit below a newer, less experienced competitor who simply asks every customer for a review and keeps their listing tidy.
That is frustrating, but it is also good news. It means you are not up against some huge marketing budget. You are up against a to-do list. Do not assume being good at the job is enough to be found. The work of being visible is separate from the work of being skilled, and both matter.
Think of your Google listing as your shopfront on the busiest street in town. You would not leave a real shopfront dark, dusty and locked. Do not leave your digital one that way either.
The bottom line
For an electrician, your website matters, but your Google listing is where the “near me” job is won or lost. Get it accurate, keep the reviews coming, and make it complete.
Do that, and when the lights go out in your suburb, you are the first name people see. That is the whole game.
