Dental SEO: Why Your Google Business Profile Matters More Than Your Website

Let me be direct. You probably spent good money on your website. Nice photos, a booking button, a page about every treatment you offer.

And most of your new patients will decide whether to call you before they ever see it.

Here is the thing. When someone searches “dentist near me”, they do not land on your home page first. They land on Google’s results. And the part that grabs their eye is not a website link at all. It is that little box of clinics with the map, the star ratings and the phone numbers.

That box is powered by your Google Business Profile. It is the free Google panel that shows your hours, reviews, photos and phone number. For a dental practice, it is the front door. Your website is the lounge room. And a lot of people decide whether to come in while they are still standing on the doorstep.

Why the profile does the heavy lifting

Think about how you look up a local business yourself. You search, you glance at the top few options, you read a couple of reviews, maybe you tap for directions. You may never open a single website.

The numbers back this up. BrightLocal’s 2026 research found 84% of people had searched for a local business online in the past three months, and 73% did it on their phone. On a phone, the map pack and the profile fill the screen. Your website is a scroll away, and most people never bother scrolling.

Whitespark, which studies what actually moves local rankings, has found for years that Google Business Profile signals and reviews sit among the strongest factors for showing up in that local pack. In plain terms: a complete, active, well reviewed profile is what gets you into the box in the first place. No box, no visibility, no matter how lovely your website is.

So the practices winning locally are not the ones with the fanciest site. They are the ones treating that free Google panel as their most important shopfront.

The mistake most clinics make

Here is where it goes wrong. A clinic sets up its profile once, years ago, and never touches it again.

The hours are wrong over the holidays. The address still lists the old suite. There are three photos, all from the fit-out. The last review is from eighteen months back. Meanwhile the practice pours all its attention into the website nobody reaches.

Do not assume Google fills the gaps for you. If your profile is thin or out of date, Google has less reason to trust it and less to show. Worse, a patient who spots the wrong hours quietly moves to the next clinic. You never hear about the booking you lost.

The real problem is that the profile feels finished once it exists. It is not. It is the thing that needs the most regular attention, because it is doing the most work.

What a profile that wins actually has

None of this is complicated or expensive. It is mostly about being accurate and consistent. Here is what earns a clinic its spot in the box.

  • Details that match your website exactly. Same practice name, same address, same phone number, right down to the spacing. When the profile and the site agree, Google trusts both. When they disagree, it trusts neither.
  • Correct hours, including public holidays. Nothing loses a booking faster than a patient turning up to a locked door. Update special hours before every long weekend.
  • Real, recent photos. The reception, the chairs, the team, the parking. People want to see where they are going, especially nervous patients. Fresh photos also tell Google the profile is looked after.
  • A steady flow of reviews. Not a burst once a year. A trickle every week. Whitespark notes that review recency matters, so a review from last Tuesday counts for more than fifty from three years ago.
  • The right categories and services. Set your primary category to dentist, then list what you actually do: emergency, kids, cosmetic, whatever it is. This is how you show up for the specific search, not just the generic one.
  • Answered questions and replies. When you respond to reviews and to the questions people post, you show a real practice stands behind the profile. That builds trust with patients and signals activity to Google.

Reviews are the part you are leaving on the table

If you do one thing after reading this, make it reviews.

BrightLocal’s 2025 review survey found 84% of people use Google to read business reviews, and 96% of consumers are happy to write one. Read that again. Almost everyone will leave a review if you ask. Most clinics simply never ask.

You do not need a clever system. You need a habit. At the end of the appointment, while the patient is happy and the visit went well, the person at the desk says one line: “If you have a spare minute, a quick Google review really helps us.” That is it. A handful a week, and within a few months your profile pulls ahead of the practice down the road that is still relying on last year’s reviews.

So where does that leave your website?

Do not hear me wrong. Your website still matters. When a patient double checks you after seeing the profile, the site is where they confirm you are the right fit. It answers the harder questions, it holds your booking system, it shows you are a real, careful practice.

But the order matters. The profile gets you seen. The website closes the deal. Most clinics have that backwards, so they polish the part fewer people reach and neglect the part everyone sees first.

Picture two practices in Toowoomba on the same street. One has a beautiful website and a stale, half filled profile. The other has a plain site but a profile with forty recent reviews, current hours and proper photos. When someone searches “dentist near me”, the second clinic is the one in the box, the one getting tapped, the one getting the call. Same street, very different diaries. And none of it was luck.

This is what good dental SEO looks like in practice. Not tricks. Just the free panel Google already gives you, kept accurate, active and full of recent reviews, working as the shopfront it was always meant to be.

Not sure how your clinic looks in that Google box compared to the practice down the road?
